The Association of African Universities (AAU) has appointed two distinguished professors from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) to spearhead crucial networks within its African Universities Experts initiative.

Prof. Lateef Sanni, Executive Director of the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development) at FUNAAB, has been appointed Chairperson of the Coordinating Team for the African Universities Experts in Agro-Processing and Food Networks.

A globally celebrated scholar in Food Science and Technology, Prof. Sanni brings unparalleled expertise in Post-Harvest Technology and Food Processing to the role. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST) and a member of the International Association of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST), among other esteemed organizations. This appointment underscores his exceptional contributions to advancing food systems and agro-processing across Africa.

Joining Prof. Sanni is Prof. Wilfred Olusegun Alegbeleye, a renowned Professor of Fisheries and Aquaculture at FUNAAB. Prof. Alegbeleye has been named a member of the Coordinating Team for the African Universities Experts in Climate Resonance, Oceans, Sustainable Water Use, Marine Resources, and Fisheries Network.

A former Dean of the Postgraduate School at FUNAAB, Prof. Alegbeleye has dedicated his career to pioneering research in fisheries and aquaculture. His affiliations with the Nigerian Association of Aquatic Scientists and the World Aquatic Scientific Society reflect his commitment to sustainable innovation in aquatic sciences and addressing climate-related challenges.

The African Universities Experts Networks, established by the AAU, aim to foster inter-university collaboration across the continent, enhancing teaching, research, and mobility for staff and students. These networks address thematic areas critical to Africa’s development, such as food security, climate resilience, and sustainable resource use.

The appointments of Professors Sanni and Alegbeleye, which took effect on November 10, 2024, are for a three-year term. This achievement further solidifies FUNAAB’s reputation as a hub of academic excellence and impactful research.

The University celebrates this milestone as its academics contribute to shaping Africa’s research and development landscape.
