“Why I didn’t have a boyfriend” Wesley Varsity Best Graduate Shares Secret to Success

At Wesley University’s 13th convocation ceremony, Miss Ifeoluwa Mercy Adeyemi, the overall best graduating student of the 2023/2024 academic session, revealed a bold decision that propelled her to academic excellence: choosing to forgo romantic relationships to maintain focus.

The 19-year-old Microbiology graduate, who achieved an outstanding 4.97 CGPA, shared her story with humility and clarity. “I intentionally avoided having a boyfriend throughout my four years in school because I saw it as a distraction,” she said during an interview. “I needed to channel my energy entirely into my studies to achieve my goals.”

For Adeyemi, the drive to excel was deeply rooted in her commitment to making her parents proud. She admitted that every time she faced potential distractions, she reminded herself of her parents’ sacrifices. “I couldn’t afford to disappoint them,” she said.

Despite her current stance, Adeyemi clarified that her decision wasn’t permanent. “I’m open to relationships in the future, but it has to be at the right time when I’m more settled and can balance responsibilities.”

Beyond academics, Adeyemi has her sights set on a transformative career in the health sector. She hopes to further her education with a Master’s degree and a Ph.D., ultimately becoming a researcher focused on combating global health challenges. “Microbiology is key to understanding and solving problems related to microorganisms and diseases. This is my passion,” she added.

The ceremony celebrated the accomplishments of 230 graduates, 39 of whom earned First Class Honours. Wesley University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Samuel Obeka, highlighted the institution’s strides in academic excellence and partnerships that reinforce its position as a leader in private education.

As part of the festivities, the Chancellor, Senior Pastor Paul Enenche, presented ₦100,000 to each First Class graduate, acknowledging their hard work and dedication. The convocation lecture, delivered by Sir Demola Aladekomo, and a spiritual crusade led by Pastor Sunday Ogwuche further enriched the event.

Prominent dignitaries, including Olori Comfort Kiladejo, who received an honorary doctorate for her contributions to entrepreneurship and humanitarian service, graced the occasion. The event underscored Wesley University’s commitment to nurturing intellectual and moral leaders equipped to impact society positively.

Miss Adeyemi’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of focus, discipline, and selflessness in achieving success. As she embarks on the next phase of her journey, she leaves behind a legacy of excellence that will undoubtedly inspire future students at Wesley University and beyond.
