Could you please introduce yourself?
My name is Ajadi Junior Sheriffdeen. I am a recent graduate of Ahmadu Bello University where I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. Throughout my academic journey, I have been passionate about the beauty of mathematics as well as its application to real life problems.
What’s your course of study?
I studied B.Sc Mathematics at Ahmadu Bello University.
Could you share with us the secret of your academic excellence?
The secret to my academic excellence lies in a combination of disciplined study habits, effective time management, and an unyielding passion for learning. I made it a point to stay curious, ask questions, and seek a deeper understanding of the subjects beyond the classroom. Additionally, I set clear goals, stayed organized with a study schedule, and surrounded myself with supportive peers and mentors who encouraged me along the way.
Could you tell us about some of your most significant academic achievements during your studies and any challenges you faced while maintaining your first-class status?
One of my most significant academic achievements is being the best graduating student in my faculty as well as achieving the highest CGPA ever in my department. This was particularly challenging due to financial issues. However, I overcame this by looking for side hustles while still studying.
Describe a research project or major assignment you completed during your degree. What was your role, and how did you contribute to its success?
During my studies, I worked on a research project titled “Computation of fixed points with an RLC-electric circuit model using hybrid contractions,” which focused on a new type of contractive mapping called “hybrid interpolative Reich-Istrǎtescu Meir-Keeler Zamfirescu contractions” and its properties, as well as its applications. My role involved research and analysis, and I contributed to its success by conducting thorough research under the guidance of my mentor and supervisor, Dr. M. S. Shagari. This project not only deepened my understanding of Mathematics but also enhanced my research skills.
How did you manage your time effectively to balance coursework, projects, and any extracurricular activities to achieve a first-class degree?
Time management was crucial in balancing my academics with extracurricular activities. I broke down large projects into manageable parts, allowing me to focus on one aspect at a time without feeling overwhelmed. Moreover, I made it a habit to study consistently rather than cramming, which gave me the flexibility to participate in activities like table tennis.
Could you provide an example of a complex problem you encountered during your studies and how you approached solving it?
One complex problem I faced was the proof of a theorem involved in my project work. I approached this by breaking the problem down into smaller components, researching potential solutions, and consulting with my supervisor. By staying persistent and open to feedback, I was able to prove it successfully.
In what ways did your family support or influence your academic journey, and how did it impact your ability to maintain a first-class standing?
My family’s support was instrumental in my academic success. Beyond financial assistance, they provided unwavering emotional encouragement that kept me motivated during challenging times. My grandparents, in particular, always believed in my potential, and their faith served as a constant source of inspiration. Their understanding and encouragement enabled me to stay focused on my studies and strive for excellence.
What is your post-graduation goal? How do you see your first-class academic background contributing to achieving this goal?
My post-graduation goal is to pursue my Master’s program. My first-class academic background has equipped me with critical thinking skills, a strong work ethic, and a solid foundation in Mathematics, which I believe will be invaluable as I pursue my Master’s program. I plan to leverage my academic achievements to make a meaningful impact in Mathematics.
What is your advice to all undergraduates who aspire to achieve First-Class?
My advice to undergraduates aiming for a first-class degree is to stay disciplined and consistent. Focus on understanding the material rather than rote memorization, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Time management is also important. Create a study plan and stick to it. Also, surround yourself with supportive peers who share similar academic goals. Most importantly, take care of your mental health, as a healthy mind is essential for academic success. Remember, persistence and a positive mindset can go a long way in achieving your dreams.
