“The Interdisciplinary Nature of Biomedical Engineering Makes it Fascinating” — Unilorin First-Class Graduate, Heba Hamzat

In an exclusive interview with Tribune Online, Heba Oyindamola Hamzat, a 23-year-old native of Ibadan, shares the journey that led her to graduate with top honours from the University of Ilorin Department of Biomedical Engineering. Hamzat’s academic path is marked by resilience and a passion for innovation, culminating in her earning a First Class degree.

Hamzat’s educational journey began at Ronk New Age Nursery and Primary School in Akobo, Ibadan, and continued at the Federal Government Girls’ College in Oyo. Her path to the University of Ilorin was not without challenges; she initially faced setbacks due to a misstep in her UTME subject combination in 2017. However, determined to pursue her aspirations, she succeeded in gaining admission through the UTME in 2018.

Reflecting on her experiences in the Biomedical Engineering program, Hamzat describes the curriculum as “fascinating” due to its interdisciplinary nature.

She notes that the programme uniquely integrates health and biological sciences with electrical, electronics, and mechanical engineering, providing a comprehensive educational experience.

Hamzat’s academic journey is highlighted by significant achievements, including her development of a mobility aid with a collision prevention mechanism. This innovation, designed to enhance the safety and hygiene of traditional mobility aids, garnered national recognition. It won a regional championship and secured the second runner-up position in a prestigious engineering students’ project competition.

Balancing her academic pursuits with leadership roles, Hamzat also served as the vice-president of her faculty’s students’ association. This role honed her ability to manage both academic and leadership responsibilities effectively.

Throughout her journey, Hamzat’s parents, particularly her father, played a pivotal role. Although her father initially encouraged her to study medicine, Hamzat found her calling in biomedical engineering, which she viewed as a perfect blend of healthcare and engineering.

Striving for excellence from the outset, Hamzat deliberately aimed for a First Class degree, a goal she achieved through dedication and hard work. Her success was supported by her family’s love, friends’ encouragement, and the mentorship of educators who guided her along the way.

Heba Hamzat’s story is a testament to her determination and passion for innovation, setting a remarkable precedent for aspiring engineers and students across the nation.
